“SCOOB!” will hit theaters next year.
It will be the first theatrically released Scooby Doo film since 2004’s “Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleased.”
Growing up, I was a really big Scooby Doo fan. I remember loving all of the movies, and I owned many of the episodes on VHS.
I don’t follow the franchise very closely anymore. But after 50 years, Scooby Doo is still going and releasing new content all of the time.
Which brings us to this new movie. I am all on board with it.
Making a newer version of a classic cartoon, or classic anything for that matter, can be a risky task. Great filmmakers have failed at it in the past. But every once in a while, a new incarnation of something old comes about, and Hollywood strikes gold with it.
To me, “SCOOB!” feels like it could be really great. It looks like they are trying something different with Scooby, while keeping much of what we love about Mystery Inc. and their famous dog in tact. This film reminds me of 2015’s “The Peanuts Movie.” Another beloved IP that reinvented itself in a good way.
I love the animation style in “SCOOB!.” The new origin story this movie is going for looks pretty intriguing as well.
I’ll admit though, the new voice cast threw me off a bit. It consists of some really big names. The cast includes:
Zac Efron as Fred Jones
Amanda Seyfried as Daphne Blake
Gina Rodriguez as Velma Dinkley
Will Forte as Shaggy Rogers
Frank Welker as Scooby Doo (The only actor to reprise his role from past Scooby Doo content)
This trailer got me really excited. It had a ton of heart and genuinely made me laugh a few times. If this movie is anything like the first preview, I have a feeling we will have a new animated classic in our hands!
Plus, I’ve heard this film is going to put other characters into it from the studio that brought us Scooby Doo in the first place, Hanna-Barbera.
I’m not exactly sure how this will work, but it could be really cool to see a film with a bunch of interconnected cartoons. Who knows, “SCOOB!” could be the kick off to something really special.
Let’s hope that this movie pushes the franchise in a new direction and gains some new fans a long the way!
